What mark do I need on the final exam?

Use your current mark, the exam’s share of the course, and the course mark you want. This is the weighted-average case schools publish in a course outline: one block of work already done, and one exam still to come.

Example numbers are filled in. Replace them with the marks from your course outline.

Exam mark required

94%on the exam to reach 80%

Prior work is 70% of the course and contributes 51.8 points. The exam can move the course mark from 51.8% (exam scored 0) to 81.8% (exam scored 100). 28.2 more points are needed, so the exam score rounds up to 94%.

A worked example

Suppose the mark on the finished work is 74%, the exam is worth 30% of the course, and the goal is 80%.

  1. The finished work is the other 70%. It contributes 74 × 0.70 = 51.8 points toward the course.
  2. The gap from 51.8 to 80 is 28.2 points.
  3. Those points have to come from an exam worth 30%, so 28.2 ÷ 0.30 = 94.
  4. You need 94% on the exam. The same current mark with a perfect exam would produce 74 × 0.70 + 100 × 0.30 = 81.8%.

The live calculator starts on this example. Replace the three numbers with your own. It rounds the required exam score up to the nearest tenth, so a result that is not a clean tenth still meets the target on a 0 to 100 scale. A score of 93.9% in this example would finish just under 80.

What has to be true for the result to match your course

The current mark must already be the weighted average of everything except the exam. If tests are 40%, quizzes are 20%, and the exam is 30%, and 10% is still an unwritten assignment, do not put 30 in the exam weight and pretend the assignment is finished. Either wait until that assignment is marked, or fold its expected result into the current mark and its weight into the prior work. This page will not invent that missing piece.

Marks above 100, bonus questions, and a dropped lowest test are outside the formula. So is a rule that you must pass the exam separately from the course. Read that rule on the outline. GradeForge does not store one official MTH1W exam weight, because the 2021 curriculum record used here does not set one.

The provincial Grade 9 assessment is not this exam. EQAO’s published framework, as stored in GradeForge’s preparation contract, has 50 operational questions plus 4 field-test questions, in two sessions. That describes the assessment’s length. It does not say the assessment is 30%, or any other percent, of a school course mark. GradeForge is not affiliated with or endorsed by EQAO.

Questions people ask

What formula does this calculator use?

Course mark = current mark × (1 − exam weight) + exam score × exam weight. The exam weight is entered as a percent of the course. Rearranged, the exam score you need is (target − current mark × prior weight) ÷ exam weight. The calculator rounds that score up to the nearest tenth of a percent.

What if my outline has tests, quizzes, and an exam?

Combine the categories you have already finished into one current mark, using each category’s share of the course. Put only the remaining exam share in the exam weight. If more than one assessment is still ahead, this page does not split them. It answers the case where the exam is the only work left.

Does Ontario Grade 9 Math have a fixed exam percentage?

No fixed course-exam weight is stored in GradeForge’s verified MTH1W curriculum record. Your school outline sets that weight. The provincial Grade 9 assessment is a separate EQAO assessment. Its question mix is on the MTH1W course map. GradeForge is not affiliated with EQAO, and this result is not a report card or an EQAO score.

What if the mark I need is above 100 or below 0?

Above 100 means a perfect exam still misses the target, if the exam is the only thing left and marks stop at 100. The page shows the course mark a perfect exam would produce. Below 0 means the work already finished meets the target even when the exam is scored 0. That only helps if your outline allows a zero to count. Some courses require the exam to be written.

Does GradeForge save the marks I type?

No. The calculation runs in your browser. The numbers are not sent to an account, and the page does not ask you to sign in.
