Represent and analyse one-variable data
Describe a distribution using its centre, spread, shape, and unusual values.
The core idea
One-variable data records one characteristic for each case. A useful description goes beyond one average: it considers a measure of centre together with spread and the distribution’s shape.
Learning example
Find the median and range
For 3, 5, 5, 7, 10, find the median and range.
- 1
The values are already ordered. The middle value is 5, so the median is 5.
- 2
The maximum is 10 and the minimum is 3.
- 3
Range = 10 − 3 = 7.
AnswerMedian 5; range 7.
A common mistake
Dividing the largest value by the smallest to find range. Range is a difference: maximum minus minimum.
