Convert and apply measurement units

Choose and convert metric units while preserving the size of the quantity.

The core idea

A conversion factor equals 1, so multiplying by it changes the unit without changing the measurement. Track the unit alongside every number.

Learning example

Convert kilometres to metres

A trail is 2.4 km long. How many metres is that?

  1. 1

    Use 1 km = 1000 m.

  2. 2

    Multiply 2.4 by 1000.

  3. 3

    2.4 km = 2400 m.

Answer2400 m

A common mistake

Dividing by 1000. Moving from a larger unit to a smaller unit produces more units, so the number should increase.
